The club was formed in 1963, however it was not until 1974 that a clubhouse was finally built. Until 1974 the “clubhouse” was located in one of the bars of the White Hart hotel, this led to the club’s nickname of “The Stags” and the antlers on the club logo. The Club have always been successful, in the last 2 years we have won the Eastern Counties Division 4 South League title and were also voted runners up in the Rugby World Magazine’s Team of the Year competition. This tradition of success is one that we are striving to continue.

We are currently running 2 competitive sides; the 1st XV are competing in the Essex league and the Essex Region Merit Table and the 2nd XV compete in the 2nd XV Essex Region Merit Table. We also compete in various National Cup competitions, whichsee players facing well known teams as they

progress through each round. As with all sports, excellence is only achieved through practice, training and competition. Competition not only against other sides but also for places within the teams. This is why Witham Rugby Club lives by the motto “Never Enough” and is constantly looking to recruit players of all abilities to maintain our competitive desire and continue our upward progression through the league structure.

Whilst our primary goal is league supremacy, we pride ourselves on being one of the most friendly and welcoming clubs in the country. We have a team for everyone. Whether you are just embarking on your rugby career or simply want to enjoy your twilight years of playing, Witham has the team for you. The 3rd XV and the Vets regularly face local opposition, enabling newcomers to rugby to learn and develop the skills needed to progress, and giving the more senior players a chance to wind down their careers in a relaxed and enjoyable fashion.Following the final whistle the club’s motto takes on a whole new meaning. We possess one of the best clubhouses in Essex, featuring a well stocked bar with very reasonable prices, lounge and function room and host regular Club social events.

Our Junior section has grown steadily since its recreation in 2001. With over 100 players in 2008, rugby is offered to kids of all ages. An active Junior Committee ensure that Witham provides a safe environment to learn the game under the watchful eyes of qualified coaches. Any sport is important when growing up, providing basic fitness and a will to succeed, combined with a chance to develop lasting friendships. Social events and trips to Premiership matches add to the enjoyment of being part of a friendly

family club. Training and matches are at 10.30 on Sunday mornings. Additional training is also held on Thursday evenings. The Juniors are always looking for new players, coaches, helpers and sponsors. Links with local schools have seen the club host the Witham Schools Cup each year, a tag tournament for year 6. Also, the new Maltings and Rickstones Academies are forging links with the club, which will benefit all. A strong Junior section can ultimately be the foundation of the future of our club. The kids playing today will hopefully help to form the first team of tomorrow. More details and contacts can be found in the Junior section of this site.

The club’s function room is well appointed with a capacity of 175. And is equipped with a fully stocked bar, lounge, kitchen and facilities. Ideal for birthdays, christenings, wedding receptions, parties, stag and hen nights.
