The recently reinvigorated team has, in large part, been bolstered this season by an influx of players drawn from the junior dads section of the club. The initiative, to get whole families playing rugby, has seen a ground swell in new and returning players coming forward to join their children at the club, in both the men’s and ladies’ teams.
Whilst the score line this weekend was a disappointment, Chelmsford 36 - Witham 0, the performance of the Witham team improved steadily throughout the game. As play advanced players gained confidence at the breakdown and in tracking back. This significantly slowed the pace of the opposition’s score line, only allowing them across the try line twice in the second half. On several occasions, breakaway runs from Witham had them inside the Chelmsford twenty two only for handling errors to deny them that elusive first try.
Despite the loss, spirits were high amongst players and supporters alike after the match. Captain, Leigh Adams, said afterwards, “Everyone played fantastically well. If we continue to play like that we will have a great season and I will be one happy captain.
