Witham Rugby Club celebrated a landmark moment on Sunday as it hosted its first-ever girls’ match, marking a significant step forward for the club and the growth of girls' rugby in the region.
The newly formed Witham U14s side, bolstered by players from Chelmsford, took to the field against a combined team from Bury and the Hadleigh Panthers. Although the final score did not fall in Witham’s favour, the young squad delivered a performance full of grit, determination, and promise.
Throughout the match, the players showed visible improvement, growing in confidence as the game progressed. Despite facing strong and experienced opposition, the Witham girls refused to let their heads drop and ensured the Panthers worked hard for every point.
Their opponents even remarked that they had faced far more established teams yet walked away with bigger scorelines, highlighting the impressive resilience shown by the Witham side.
While the scoreboard told one story, the true victory was for girls’ rugby itself. The entire club expressed immense pride in this pioneering team of young women, applauding their spirit, teamwork, and unwavering determination.
