This weekend sees Witham RUFC U16M travel to Westcliff to play the Westcliff Tigers in the final of the Essex RFU Waterfall Cup.

From all the coaches and as team manager we are immensely proud of the squad. They have played this season with complete respect to the sport and its values. I am equally nervous for Sundays match but confident the squads hard work will prevail.

The Waterfall Cup is an annual cup competition for all age groups between U13 and U18s. The format is several rounds where teams progress in a “Waterfall” manner based on the match results. Like senior rugby cup competitions where a cup, shield and bowl will be played for in a final, the “Waterfall” allows all divisions through the individual age groups the potential of reaching several finals where a cup is played for. The beauty of the Waterfall Cup is giving teams opportunities to play higher division they wouldn’t normally given their assigned league. This has definitely increased the competitiveness within Essex and also giving the teams a chance of taking home silverware to their club cabinets.

This will be the 2nd time the U16M competed in a Waterfall Cup final. The team narrowly missed out to victory against Chelmsford as U13M. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the subsequent U14's and U15's seasons were cancelled. This is a long-awaited return for the squad and whilst nerves are settling in, the players a very much looking forward to the match.
