Witham arrived at 2nd placed Braintree looking to upset the odds and started well. The forwards chatted well to gain possession and release the backs. Jess Hopkins managed to break the line and sprint free for the opening try. The hosts rallied and managed to get ahead with 2 unconverted tries. But Witham knew they could score and it was Jess again that broke through for Witham to re-take the lead. After another Braintree try, Jess completed her hatrick. This, along with Kelly Barlow's 3 conversions gave Witham a 21-17 lead at half time.
Braintree, were clearly rattled by Withams performance and made some changes. Meanwhile, a couple of injuries disrupted Witham's line up. As players tired, mistakes crept in and the hosts took full advantage to extend a comfortable lead. However, when Witham got into their half late on, the determination of the forwards was rewarded as Kerry Challis drove through for her first Witham try.
Forward of the day was Gemma Burgess. Her determination to get back on in spite of an injury was inspiring.
Back of the day was Jess Hopkins. Not only did she score 3 tries but her defensive tackling was outstanding.
Joker was Chloe Webb. It's not often a player says "just give me a minute while I throw up please ref"
