Witham III produced a determined and wholehearted performance despite going down 50–14 in a lively friendly away at Ongar, who were strengthened by several Writtle players.
The match burst into life from the outset, with Witham refusing to be overawed by opposition featuring higher league experience. The visitors matched their hosts physically in the early exchanges, putting in some big tackles and working tirelessly around the park.
Although the home side ultimately proved clinical, Witham’s effort and attitude never dipped. Two well-earned tries provided reward for their persistence, with Bart Wilkinson and Steve Challis both crossing the whitewash after sustained pressure.
Wilkinson also added the extras on both occasions, calmly converting his own score and Challis’ try to account for Witham’s 14 points.
While the final scoreline reflected Ongar/Writtle’s cutting edge, Witham could take plenty of positives from a committed team display against strong opposition.
Jamie Renwick and Paul Stevenson were named Men of the Match for outstanding all-round performances that epitomised the visitors’ spirit and endeavour throughout.
